Today is Easter Sunday, and I had the pleasure of directing the Sunday school kids in singing for today's morning worship service. Chris Chin and Joshua Fong warmed things up with a snappy little dialog intended both to make people laugh and to get them in mood for hearing the Easter message.
Then the singing began...and what nice sound the children produced. The songs were simple yet powerful. Everyone knows "He's Got the Whole World in his Hands" and "Were You There," but hearing it from our children was special.
During the first song, I suddenly had this flashback, circa 1971. I was just 8...Mario's age. The image of Ed Wong popped into my head. He was my Sunday School teacher. Before class started we would sit in little chairs and sing and pray with him. He was the Ted Fong and Danny Fong of his day. Or should I say, we are the Ed Wongs of today.
"Into my heart, into my heart,
Come into my hear, Lord Jesus,
Come in today, come into stay,
Come into my heart Lord Jesus."
I still remember that song, because Mr. Wong taught it to me! And there were so many more that I memorized and can rattle off even now. And now here I am teaching kids how to sing.
After church today, Ed Wong said to me, "Ted, the kids sounded great." I told him, "Mr. Wong, I couldn't have done it without you." He just smiled...not sure he made the connection. Then I looked at him and thought "this guy has not aged one day. He is still the Ed Wong that I had as Sunday a school teacher 38 years ago." What a blessing to have him in our midst.
God has blessed my childhood with wonderful teachers including Ed Wong, Kitty Chan, Rusell Fong, Laura Leong. Today was one of those days when it just all came back.
