Forgive And Forget? (Part 1)
10/18/09

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

I. POSITIONAL forgiveness in our hearts is UNCONDITIONAL.

A. In Christ, God forgives all our sin unconditionally (Ephesians 1:7).

B. We are to forgive any offense against us from our hearts unconditionally. (Matt. 18:35)

II. EXPERIENTIAL forgiveness in relationships is CONDITIONAL.

A. Our fellowship with God is restored only when we CONFESS our sin.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

B. We should extend forgiveness relationally to those who sin against us only when they REPENT of their sin (Matt. 18:15-17; 2 Cor. 2:6-7).

Pastor Louis' message today addressed the topic of forgiveness. His message reminded me about how amazing God's love is for us. He loves us so much that He gave His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins so we might have a new life, forgiven of all our sins. At the conclusion of part 1 of 2 on this topic, the worship team sang, "And Now My Lifesong Sings," which reminded me of my life before Christ. I once was lost, blind, and dead; but now I'm found, see, and live. The lyrics follow:

I once was lost, but now I’m found
I once was lost, but now I’m found
So far away, but I’m home now
I once was lost, but now I’m found
And now my lifesong sings

I once was blind, but now I see
I once was blind, but now I see
I don’t know how, but when He touched me
I once was blind, but now I see

And now my lifesong sings
And now my lifesong sings
And now my lifesong sings

I once was dead, but now I live
I once was dead, but now I live
Now my life to You I give
Now my life to You I give
Now my life to You I give

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Let my lifesong sing to You

Wow! How amazing is this! I once was lost, but now I’m found! I once was blind, but now I see! I once was dead, but now I live! This is all because of God's amazing love, grace, and forgiveness!

After the service, I shared with Pastor Louis I could stand to hear about the topic of forgiveness every week. I need to continue learning how not only to forget, but also to forgive. Thanks to God, I have been and continue to be forgiven!

I look forward to hearing part two of Pastor Louis' sermon, "Forgive and Forget?" next week.
