Forgive And Forget? Part 3

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

I. POSITIONAL forgiveness in our hearts is UNCONDITIONAL.

A. In Christ, God forgives all our sin unconditionally (Ephesians 1:7).

B. We are to forgive any offense against us from our hearts unconditionally. (Matt. 18:35)

II. EXPERIENTIAL forgiveness in relationships is CONDITIONAL.

A. Our fellowship with God is restored only when we CONFESS our sin.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

B. We should extend forgiveness relationally to those who sin against us only when they REPENT of their sin (Matt. 18:15-17; 2 Cor. 2:6-7).

C. What can help us forgive sinners in our hearts when it's a struggle? (Matt. 18:21-35)

III. Forgiveness and CONSEQUENCES of sin - forgive and forget?

A. "Forget" in sense of not holding a GRUDGE (1 Cor. 13:4-5).

B. “May not forget” as in matters of TRUST, friendship (Acts 15:37-38).

Last night, the State of Virginia executed John Allen Muhammad, the "D.C. Sniper." I ran across this story on CNN which interviewed Bob Meyers, the brother of one of the victims. When asked him if he had forgiven his brother's murderer. He said yes and gave his reasons:

"One is that God calls for me to do that in the Bible and the second thing is related to that. If I don't, it rots me from the inside out. It doesn't really hurt John Muhammad or anybody that I have bitterness against [him]."

I'm not sure how I would answer if put in a similar situation. I know forgiveness in my head, but my heart would have to follow. Mr. Meyers situation is extreme, but just as there is evil in the world, it really shows us the flip side...the profound goodness of God and the human spirit.
