“Apologetics” - Presenting A Reasonable Faith!
(1/24/10)

Confusing definition of the word “apologetics” - “the branch of theology concerned with the defense or proof of Christianity.” Not really so much a defense or a proof! Think of it more as a reasonable, compelling explanation for our faith.

I. The existence of God.

No one can prove that God does or does not exist! However, we can seek to demonstrate why it is a reasonable faith that chooses to believe God does in fact exist.

Compare two models for the existence of the universe. Both require presuppositions.

Christian faith begins with (presupposes) __________________

Evolution begins with (presupposes) ________________ and ____________________.

How do each of the above models explain the existence of life, intelligence, emotions?

II. Why is Christ the ___________________ Way?

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

Christ is the only great leader of any major religion who claimed to be ______________ with God. (John 10:30-33).

Christianity is the only major religion that teaches that God’s love and grace sent His Son to die in our place to pay the penalty for all our sin (Romans 5:8). All other religions teach salvation by doing good works (Ephesians 2:8-10).

III. Unbelievers will be drawn to Christ by what they __________, not just what they hear.

“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

“I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:23)

Evolution begins with (presupposes) ENERGY and MATTER.

How do each of the above models explain the existence of life, intelligence, emotions?

Verses to consider:

2"King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews" (Acts 26:2)

3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15)

15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. (Ephesians 4:15)

Wow! Very interesting message from Pastor Louis today. In short, both the Christian and the athiest are making, in his words, "presuppositions" about the existence or non-existence of God. This hit home for me. No matter how hard I try to take the position that there is no God, I find that this too requires a great deal of faith and some majorly wild assumptions. For many Christians including myself, believing in God is just more rational and reasonable than believing He doesn't exist.
