I was pleasantly surprised by our sound on Sunday. Some of you have never played or sung in a worship band or played from chord symbols, but you managed to get through "Hosanna" and "Come Now is the Time to Worship." It will be come easier with more practice.

This Sunday we'll meet at 3 PM, not 7 PM, due the Chinese New Year Dinner which starts at 5:30 PM.

Please practice these songs:

  • How Great Thou Art, Page 28 (Key of C, starts on "So," a traditional hymn played as a bossa nova).  This will introduce you to the bossa nova style, which is very similar to light rock/straight eigths style. It requires smooth voice leading from the keyboards to sound right. So work out the chords ahead of time. Get ideas from Page 14 of the Resource Book. Here is a good example of bossa nova from the legendary Stan Getz.
  • Step by Step, Page 29 (Key of G, also starts on "So," various styles).  People have performed this song at different tempos styles. I would like vocalists to listen to different versons on YouTube and then at class tell the band how they would like it played. And of course, do the count off.  Keyboards...work out your chords so that you are changing from one to the next in a smooth fashion. No jumping around.  Get ideas from Page 15 of the Resource Book. Work out where you are going to play long notes, eight notes, arpegios, etc.

Everyone should practice with a metronome or drum machine.  Practice everyday and do it with intensity. Over time, you'll find that practicing is a joy and a gift from God. Eventually, you should have these songs memorized. Free yourself from the music, so you can start interacting with the other musicians.

Keyboard players...continue practicing the different Keyboard Styles on Pages 18-21. Learn these patterns and apply them to your playing.

Vocalists... your projection was really strong this week. Whatever Dan taught you is working.  Some of you said that the notes were too high. Your job as a singer is to tell the band how you want the song sung in terms of roadmap, style, tempo... and key. So tell us what key you want (name the key, just don't say "lower") and we will adjust accordingly...won't we guys :-)

I am praying for your diligence and success.

Ted
